Snow Returns to Kashmir, Ending Dry Spell: Meteorological Department Forecasts More

Srinagar, January 26: The extended dry spell in Kashmir has come to an end with fresh snowfall gracing various areas, including the renowned ski-resort Gulmarg.

The local meteorological department predicts further snowfall by the month’s end.

Recent reports from agencies indicate that places like Gulmarg, Kishtwar, Sonamarg, Pir Ki Gali, Shopian, Doodhpathri, Gurez, and others have received light snowfall since yesterday, marking the conclusion of the prolonged dry period.

However, the plains, notably Srinagar, witnessed intermittent sunshine throughout the day.

The Meteorological department forecasts isolated light snowfall in higher reaches late tomorrow evening.

Director of the Meteorological (MeT) department, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, mentioned a possibility of light to moderate rain and snow across several places on January 28-29 due to cloudy weather conditions.

This trend is expected to continue on January 30-31, with light to moderate precipitation in widespread areas. February 01 and 02 may see light rain and snow in many places.

In anticipation of the weather system from January 28-31, the weatherman issued an advisory, warning of potential temporary road closures in higher reaches and significant passes such as Sinthan Pass, Mughal Road, Sadhna and Razdan Pass, Zojila, etc. Travelers are advised to plan accordingly.

The recent snowfall has brought joy to tourism stakeholders, who anticipate increased tourist footfall in the Valley. Additionally, minimum temperatures have risen in multiple areas, with Srinagar recording a low of minus 0.5 degrees Celsius.

Pahalgam registered a minimum temperature of minus 0.4 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg reported a low of minus 3.7 degrees Celsius.

Qazigund recorded 0.2 degrees Celsius, Kokernag settled at minus 0.1 degrees Celsius, and Kupwara at 2.5 degrees Celsius
