Winter Vacation Extension Likely: Heavy Snowfall Predicted for Kashmir
The picturesque valley of Kashmir is bracing itself for heavy rain and snowfall in the upcoming days, raising concerns about the potential delay in the reopening of schools.
Independent weather forecasts have issued alerts, predicting the arrival of a strong Western disturbance that could bring moderate to very heavy rain and snowfall from tomorrow evening until 03 March across most parts of the region.
As the calendar flips to 29 February, cloudy skies are expected to dominate the landscape, with rain and snowfall anticipated to commence in the evening across various areas.
The meteorological projections for 01 March paint a picture of moderate to heavy rainfall in the plains, while higher altitudes are set to experience heavy to very heavy snowfall, adding a blanket of white to the majestic mountains.
Moving forward to 02 March, heavy rain showers are forecasted to drench most plains of Kashmir, gradually transitioning into snowfall. The bustling city of Srinagar is not exempt from this weather phenomenon, with predictions indicating the likelihood of heavy snowfall in the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall is also anticipated over vast plains of Jammu, adding to the meteorological complexity of the situation.
By the time 03 March arrives, the weather pattern is expected to undergo a subtle shift, with forecasts suggesting light to moderate snow and rain until afternoon, followed by an improvement in weather conditions towards the evening.
However, the impact of this weather disturbance is not limited to mere precipitation. Snow accumulation in the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir is projected to range from 2-6 feet, posing challenges to both locals and tourists alike.
Tourist hotspots such as Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam, and Doodhpatri are bracing for significant snowfall during this period, with accumulations expected to reach 2-4 feet. This poses potential disruptions to travel plans and outdoor activities in these popular destinations.
Moreover, the inclement weather conditions may lead to shooting stones along vulnerable areas of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, especially due to heavy rainfall.
The adverse weather conditions could also temporarily disrupt major highways like the Srinagar-Leh and Mughal road, primarily due to snow accumulation, raising concerns about transportation and connectivity across the region.
Additionally, a noticeable drop in day temperatures is anticipated, further adding to the challenges posed by this weather system.
