Important Order Issued for Social Media Users in J&K: District Magistrate Imposes Restrictions

In response to escalating concerns over potential threats to public safety and communal harmony, District Magistrate Sachin Kumar Vaishya has issued an order under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973.

The order, effective immediately, prohibits individuals and social media platforms operating in District Jammu from disseminating any content deemed derogatory, discriminatory, or provocative.

The decision to invoke Section 144 stems from reports received from law enforcement agencies highlighting the dissemination of disinformation on social media platforms.

The spread of such content, according to authorities, poses a significant risk to public tranquility, human lives, and property.

District Magistrate Sachin Kumar Vaishya emphasized the need for immediate preventive measures to avert any potential breach of peace and order.

Under the order, any violation will be met with punitive action under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860.

Given the urgency of the situation, the order has been passed ex-parte as individual notifications cannot be served to all concerned parties.

To ensure widespread dissemination, the order will be published on the District Website, prominent newspapers, and displayed on notice boards at various administrative offices within District Jammu, including the offices of SSP Jammu, all SDMs, all Tehsildars, all SDPOs, and all SHOs.

This proactive measure by the District Magistrate aims to curb the dissemination of harmful content on social media platforms, safeguarding communal harmony, and maintaining public tranquility in District Jammu.
