Paid Holidays Declared for General Elections to Lok Sabha 2024 in Jammu and Kashmir

In a significant move ahead of the General Elections to the Lok Sabha 2024, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has announced paid holidays for certain parliamentary constituencies. This decision, in accordance with Section 135 B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, aims to ensure maximum participation in the electoral process.

As per Government Order No. 914-JK(GAD) of 2024 dated April 1, 2024, paid holidays will be observed in the following parliamentary constituencies on the specified dates:

1. Udhampur: April 19th and April 26th (both Fridays)
2. Jammu: April 19th and April 26th (both Fridays)
3. Anantnag-Rajouri: May 7th (Tuesday)
4. Srinagar: May 13th (Monday)
5. Baramulla: May 20th (Monday)

On these designated poll days, individuals employed in any business, trade, industrial undertaking, or other establishments within the mentioned constituencies are entitled to a paid holiday to exercise their voting rights. Furthermore, even daily wage and casual workers will be eligible for the holiday along with their wages for the poll day.

Moreover, individuals who are ordinarily residents of a constituency and registered as electors, but serving or employed in an industrial establishment outside the constituency, including casual workers, will also benefit from a paid holiday on the day of the poll.

The government has emphasized that these paid holidays will also be recognized under the explanation to Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, ensuring compliance across various sectors.

This directive, signed by Sanjeev Verma, IAS Commissioner/Secretary to the Government, reflects the administration’s commitment to facilitating democratic participation and ensuring that every eligible voter has the opportunity to cast their ballot.

The Government has directed all Financial Commissioners (Additional Chief Secretaries) and the Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir, to adhere to the provisions outlined in the order.
