JKBOSE Announces New Textbooks for Classes 1-12 from 2024-25: Crucial Curriculum Update

The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) has issued a crucial notification, outlining the mandatory implementation of its curriculum and textbooks for classes 1st to 12th, starting from the upcoming academic session 2024-25.

This directive is in accordance with the powers and functions granted to the Board under the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education Act, 1975.

The Act, dated August 27, 1975, and subsequent amendments under the Reorganization Act, 2019, empower the Board to prescribe courses, develop curricula, and detail syllabi, including the preparation of textbooks for various school examinations.

The State Affiliation Committee/Recognition Committee, through its resolutions, emphasized strict adherence to JKBOSE instructions. Any deviation may result in disciplinary action, penalties, or both, as per Rule 11 (a) of the J&K School Education Rules 2010.

A significant legal development transpired when the Private Schools United Front filed a writ petition challenging the notification. However, the Hon’ble High Court of J&K and Ladakh dismissed the petition, affirming the Board’s authority to make the prescribed textbooks mandatory for all private schools.

In an earlier notice, the JKBOSE had urged affiliated private schools to implement its textbooks for classes 6th to 8th from the academic session 2023-24. The recent notification extends this mandate to cover all classes from 1st to 12th, starting the academic session 2024-25.

Parents are advised to ensure that schools affiliated with JKBOSE strictly adhere to the prescribed curriculum and textbooks. Any attempt by schools to enforce the purchase of books/materials other than those published and prescribed by JKBOSE should be reported promptly to JKBOSE authorities.

Non-compliance by academic institutions may result in disciplinary measures, penalties, or both, as specified by the Board and the Government of J&K.
