According to reports from Thread Fabric, Android users are urged to immediately delete five specific apps from their devices. Although removed from the Google Play Store, these apps may still lurk on your phone, posing a serious threat to your financial security.
They harbor a banking trojan known as Anatsa, which can compromise your personal data and execute unauthorized transactions through your banking apps.
The Anatsa trojan, embedded within these apps, has already affected numerous users worldwide, including those in the U.S. during the previous summer.
Surprisingly, these apps managed to amass between 150,000 to 200,000 downloads before being ousted from the Play Store by Google.
Dubbed as “dropper apps,” they initially appear harmless but conceal malicious payloads designed to infiltrate your device. Once installed, they surreptitiously load additional harmful apps onto your phone.
Recent findings reveal that these dropper apps, strategically categorized under “Top New Free” in the Google Play Store, target users in various countries, including the U.K., Germany, Spain, Slovakia, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic.
What’s more alarming is their evolving sophistication. The latest versions utilize a “multi-stage infection process” to evade detection, effectively bypassing security measures even on Android 13.
The identified apps include: Phone Cleaner – File Explorer, PDF Viewer – File Explorer, PDF Reader – Viewer & Editor, Phone Cleaner: File Explorer, and PDF Reader: File Manager. If any of these apps reside on your device, it’s imperative to uninstall them immediately to prevent potential financial loss.
To avoid falling victim to similar threats, exercise caution when downloading apps. Check Play Store reviews for any suspicious activity, such as excessive battery drain, sluggish performance, or overheating.
Additionally, scrutinize user comments for indications of deceptive functionality, ensuring a safer digital experience.
