Expect Moderate to Heavy Snowfall in Kashmir Plains, MeT Office Warns

Srinagar, Jan 29 – The Meteorological Department has issued a forecast predicting moderate to heavy snowfall across the plains of Kashmir, with specific areas likely to experience significant snow accumulation.

The forecast, covering January 29th to February 4th, indicates generally cloudy weather with the possibility of light rain or snow in scattered areas on January 29th.

From January 30th to January 31st, the department expects light to moderate rain or snow in many parts of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in districts such as Kupwara, Bandipora, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Shopian, Kulgam, and Anantnag.

Higher reaches of these districts could see heavy snowfall during this period.

February 1st and 2nd are expected to be generally cloudy with light rain or snow possible in some areas later in the afternoon or evening.

Looking ahead to February 3rd and 4th, the forecast suggests the possibility of light to moderate rain or snow in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

For the Jammu Division, intermittent light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, is anticipated in the plains.

Higher reaches, including areas such as Banihal, Ponch, Doda, and Kishtwar, could experience light to moderate snowfall on January 30th and 31st, as well as on February 3rd and 4th.

In light of these forecasts, the Meteorological Department has issued an advisory. Firstly, it warns that the weather system may result in the temporary closure of roads in higher reaches and important passes like Sinthan Pass, Mughal Road, Sadhna and Razdan Pass, and Zojila on January 30th and 31st. Travelers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly.

Additionally, farmers are advised to refrain from irrigation and fertilizer application and to drain excess water from orchards and fields during the aforementioned period.

The Meteorological Center in Srinagar urges residents and travelers to stay informed about the weather conditions and take necessary precautions to ensure safety and minimize disruptions during this period of anticipated inclement weather.
