Heavy Snowfall Hits Kashmir: MeT Releases New Forecast, Check Here

Srinagar, March 01: A fresh wave of snowfall blanketed the renowned ski-resort Gulmarg and other elevated regions, while intermittent light rains graced the plains of Kashmir today.

The Meteorological department predicts an impending heavy snowfall across higher altitudes starting tonight, with a three-day wet spell expected to continue.

The local Meteorological department anticipates the most intense weather activity from March 01 night to March 02 night. Reports from the news agency indicate fresh snowfall in various parts of Kashmir, including Gurez, Sadhna Top, and Razdan Pass, alongside Gulmarg. Meanwhile, the plains, including Srinagar, experienced scattered light rains.

Director of the Meteorological department, Dr. Mukhar Ahmad, forecasts widespread moderate rain and snow across most regions of Jammu and Kashmir until March 03 afternoon, with the peak activity expected during the nights of March 01 to March 02.

He warns of the possibility of heavy to very heavy snowfall in certain areas, particularly in the higher reaches of north Kashmir, Central & South Kashmir, and the Pir Panjal range of Jammu division during this period.

Dr. Ahmad further advises caution, as thunder, lightning, hailstorms, and gusty winds are expected on March 01 and March 02. However, the weather is anticipated to stabilize after March 10, with only scattered light rain and snow predicted for the night of March 06 to March 07.

In light of the anticipated heavy snowfall, travelers and tourists are urged to plan their journeys accordingly and heed the advisories issued by the administration and traffic police.

Residents of hilly areas are advised to avoid avalanche-prone and sloped regions, following avalanche warnings and advisories closely. Farmers are also advised to suspend agricultural operations until March 03 for safety reasons.

Meanwhile, the Srinagar-Jammu highway remains closed to vehicular traffic today due to shooting stones triggered by the recent wet spell in Kishtwar.

Officials urge the public to refrain from traveling on NH-44 until the weather improves and the road is cleared.
