MeT Issues New Weather Prediction: Finally Snowfall Expected in Kashmir

Srinagar, January 13: The meteorological department issued a forecast on Saturday indicating the likelihood of dry weather persisting until January 23.

The weatherman stated that feeble Western Disturbances (WDs) are approaching on January 16 and 20, bringing the possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches.

A meteorological official in Srinagar shared, “Dry weather is likely to continue until January 23, with feeble WDs approaching on the 16th and 20th evening.”

The influence of these WDs is expected to bring generally cloudy weather and light snow over isolated higher reaches.

Between January 21 and 23, the forecast predicts generally dry weather. Additionally, the official mentioned the “redevelopment of fog with cold day conditions from tomorrow onwards until January 16 over the plains of Jammu Division.”

Meanwhile, freezing weather conditions showed some relief, with Srinagar recording a low of 0.2°C, marking a significant rise from the previous night’s minus 4.0°C.

The meteorological official noted that the temperature was 2.3°C above normal for this time of the year in the summer capital of J&K.

Other regions also experienced milder temperatures, with Qazigund, Pahalgam, Kokernag, Kupwara, and Gulmarg reporting above-normal lows.

Jammu recorded a minimum of 4.0°C, slightly below normal, while Banihal, Batote, and Bhaderwah reported varying low temperatures.

The Kashmir valley is currently in the midst of ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ a 40-day harsh winter period set to end on January 30. Following this, a 20-day ‘Chillai-Khurd’ period will occur between January 30 and February 19, succeeded by a 10-day ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) period from February 20 to March 1.
