Srinagar, January 7: Srinagar faced its coldest night of the season, as temperatures plunged to a bone-chilling minus 5.6°C. The relentless freeze in the Kashmir Valley continued unabated on Sunday.

A weather official disclosed that the mercury dropped by two notches from the previous night, marking 3.7°C below the usual for this time of year in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

The minimum temperature of minus 5.6°C in Srinagar surpassed the recorded lows of minus 5.4°C on December 13 last year and January 6 this year. Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir, experienced a low of minus 5.0°C, below the normal by 1.9°C.

Pahalgam, the famed resort in south Kashmir, registered a frigid minus 6.5°C, slightly above the norm by 0.5°C. Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, marked a minimum of minus 2.7°C, higher by 1.3°C compared to the previous night.

Moving to the north, Kupwara town saw a low of minus 5.3°C, below normal by 2.6°C. Gulmarg, the renowned skiing destination in the north, recorded minus 4.4°C, exceeding the usual by 3.4°C.

Jammu experienced its coldest night this season with a minimum of 3.4°C, 4.0°C below normal. Banihal noted a low of minus 2.2°C, Batote at 2.1°C, and Bhaderwah at minus 0.2°C.

The Kashmir Valley is currently in the grip of ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ a 40-day harsh winter period ending on January 30. Following this, ‘Chillai-Khurd’ spans from January 30 to February 19, succeeded by ‘Chillai-Bachha’ from February 20 to March 1.

According to the weatherman, ‘generally dry weather’ is expected until January 8, with a chance of light rain/snow over “extreme isolated higher reaches” on January 9. From January 10-14, generally dry weather is anticipated, with no significant weather activity expected until January 14.
