Weather Update: MeT Issues Advisory for Kashmir Ahead of Heavy Snowfall

A moderate to intense Western Disturbance is on the horizon, set to affect Jammu and Kashmir and its adjacent regions from the night of 17th to the forenoon of 21st February 2024.

This weather phenomenon is expected to bring widespread light to moderate rain/snow throughout Jammu and Kashmir, with heavy snowfall projected in select higher areas, primarily from the 18th to the 20th of February.

The impending system is predicted to result in heavy rain/snow over the Pirpanjal Range of Jammu Division and the higher reaches of Kashmir Division, encompassing locales such as Anantnag, Pahalgam, Kulgam, Shopian, Pir Ki Gali, Gulmarg, Sonamarg-Zojila axis, Bandipora-Razdan Pass, and Kupwara-Sadhna pass.

In light of these forecasts, several potential impacts are being considered:

Transport Disruption: The expected weather conditions may lead to disruptions in both surface and air transport, including the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and other major roads in the middle and higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir.

Travel Advisory: Travelers and tourists are advised to plan their journeys with caution, taking into account the likelihood of adverse weather conditions during this period. It is recommended to monitor weather updates closely and consider postponing non-essential travel plans if necessary.

Safety Precautions: Residents in snowbound areas are urged to refrain from venturing into steep and avalanche-prone regions to ensure their safety. It is crucial to exercise caution and follow local authorities’ guidance to minimize the risk of accidents or emergencies.

Agricultural Guidance: Farmers are advised to suspend irrigation, fertilizer, and chemical spray activities during the aforementioned period to mitigate potential adverse effects on crops. This precautionary measure is essential to safeguard agricultural productivity and prevent damage to crops due to inclement weather conditions.

Additionally, a significant drop in daytime temperatures is anticipated during this weather event, which could further exacerbate the impact on various sectors, including transportation, tourism, agriculture, and public safety.

Therefore, it is imperative for individuals and communities to stay informed and prepared for potential challenges associated with the approaching weather system.
