Srinagar, January 5: Unrelenting cold weather persists across Jammu and Kashmir, even as there’s a slight uptick in the minimum temperature. Srinagar, the summer capital of J&K, recorded a chilly -3.0°C on Friday.

Although Srinagar had witnessed a minimum of -3.8°C the previous night, the current temperature remains 0.9°C below the normal range for this time of the year, according to a meteorological department official.

Qazigund reported a minimum of -3.0°C, a slight improvement from the -3.4°C recorded the night before. Pahalgam, a renowned resort in south Kashmir, experienced a low of -4.5°C, slightly above the -5.1°C recorded on the previous night.

Kokernag, another location in south Kashmir, saw a minimum of -2.0°C, which was 1.5°C above the normal range. In north Kashmir’s Kupwara town, the temperature dipped to -2.6°C, just 0.1°C below the usual range.

Gulmarg, the famed skiing resort in north Kashmir, reported a low of -3.5°C, indicating a 3.5°C increase from the previous night. Jammu, the winter capital of J&K, recorded a minimum of 5.1°C, 2.2°C below the normal range.

Banihal experienced a low of -0.4°C, Batote 3.0°C, and Bhaderwah 0.2°C, as per the official data.

The Kashmir valley is currently in the midst of ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ a 40-day intense winter period ending on January 30. Following this, ‘Chillai-Khurd’ spans from January 30 to February 19, succeeded by ‘Chillai-Bachha’ from February 20 to March 1.

The weather forecast anticipates generally cloudy and dry conditions over plains, with the possibility of “very light” snow over isolated higher reaches in the next 24 hours.

January 6-7 is expected to be mainly dry, with generally cloudy weather and a chance of light rain/snow over isolated higher reaches on January 8. From January 9-10, generally dry weather is predicted.
