Latest Weather Update for Jammu and Kashmir by Sonam Lotus

Srinagar, January 19 – The meteorological department has predicted upcoming weather changes in Jammu and Kashmir, with expectations of light snow in isolated higher reaches on January 25, followed by light rain and snow across scattered places from January 26 to 28.

A meteorological department official informed that dry weather is likely to persist until January 24, with generally cloudy conditions expected on the evening of the 20th.

Further insights from different weather models suggest the possibility of light to moderate rain or snow at various locations from January 29 to 31.

In addition to precipitation forecasts, the MeT department highlighted the likelihood of moderate to dense fog and a decline in daytime temperatures over Jammu Division in the next three days.

Regarding the current temperatures, Srinagar recorded a minimum of minus 4.9°C, Qazigund at minus 5.0°C, Pahalgam at minus 6.3°C, Kokernag at minus 1.4°C, Kupwara at minus 5.0°C, and Gulmarg at minus 3.6°C.

These readings indicate variations from the previous night and deviations from the normal temperatures for this time of the year.

Jammu registered a minimum of 5.0°C, while Banihal recorded minus 0.8°C, Batote minus 1.7°C, and Bhaderwah minus 0.4°C.

The Kashmir valley is currently experiencing the ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ a 40-day harsh winter period that concludes on January 29.

Following this, a 20-day ‘Chillai-Khurd’ period extends from January 30 to February 19, followed by a 10-day ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) period from February 20 to March 1. Stay tuned for more detailed weather updates in the coming days. (GNS)
