Meteorological Department Predicts Heavy Snowfall in Final Phase of Harsh Winter in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 21: Despite three-quarters of the 40-day winter period, ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ passing without any rain or snow, the meteorological department forecasts a wet spell in the final phase for Jammu and Kashmir.

A meteorological official revealed that dry weather is expected to persist until Wednesday, with a likelihood of generally cloudy weather and light snow at isolated higher reaches on January 24 and 25.

Between January 27-28, generally cloudy conditions with light rain/snow over scattered places are anticipated.

The official stated, “There is a possibility of light to moderate rain/snow at many places very likely (details awaited) from January 29-31.”

Meanwhile, the plains of Jammu division may experience moderate to dense fog and a decrease in daytime temperatures over the next two days.

In terms of night temperatures, Srinagar recorded a low of minus 4.8°C, below the previous night’s minus 3.7°C, and 1.6°C below normal for this time of the year. Qazigund, Pahalgam, Kokernag, Kupwara, and Gulmarg also witnessed variations in temperatures, with the latter being 3.2°C above normal for the renowned skiing resort in north Kashmir.

Jammu recorded a minimum of 5.6°C, below normal by 1.4°C for the winter capital of J&K. Banihal, Batote, and Bhaderwah registered their respective low temperatures as well.

The Kashmir valley is currently in the midst of ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ which concludes on January 29.

Following this, ‘Chillai-Khurd’ will span from January 30 to February 19, succeeded by ‘Chillai-Bachha’ from February 20 to March 1.
