Weather Alert: Snow Expected in Jammu and Kashmir, Check Detailed Forecast Here
The northern regions of India are gearing up for a renewed bout of rain and snow over the upcoming weekend, as a new meteorological system is poised to influence the local weather patterns starting tomorrow.
According to the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a western disturbance persists as a trough in middle tropospheric westerlies over North India. These disturbances, essentially low-pressure systems originating over the Mediterranean Sea, move eastward, accumulating moisture that eventually precipitates over North India.
This particular system is anticipated to bring light rainfall and/or snowfall to isolated areas across Jammu-Kashmir from Friday to Sunday (Dec 22-24). Similar weather conditions are expected in Uttarakhand, north Punjab, and north Haryana on Saturday (Dec 23).
Additionally, isolated pockets of Punjab and Haryana may experience dense fog during the early morning hours over the next three days.
In response to these forecasts, the IMD has issued a yellow watch for the mentioned subdivisions during this three-day period. Residents are urged to stay informed about the local weather situation.
During the winter months, such western disturbances play a crucial role in triggering precipitation, including rain and snow, across the Western Himalayan Region. Despite their usual contribution, the lower frequency and intensity of these disturbances this year have led to a drier-than-normal December in the northern states.
Between December 1 and 20, Jammu-Kashmir (12.5 mm), Ladakh (0 mm), and Himachal (5.5 mm) have all recorded significant deficits ranging between 60-100% compared to their respective long-term averages.
Uttarakhand (4.4 mm) and Punjab (3.3 mm) have registered deficits of 49% and 34%, respectively, while Haryana’s recorded rainfall (at 2.8 mm) is just 4% below its normal for the month.
